Entry Requirements
Certificate in Foundation Course (OFC)
(i) A certificate of Secondary Education (C.S.E.E.) or its equivalent with at least 5 (five) passes in approved subjects or 3 credits AND a possession of one (1) principal pass and one (1) or more subsidiaries. Or
(ii) A certificate of Secondary Education Examination (C.S.E.E) or its equivalent with at least 5 passes or 3 credits in approved subjects AND a certificate obtained after attending a professional course lasting at least nine months related to the degree programme that the applicant is intending to pursue.
Exceptional cases regarding experience will be considered on merit. The applicant should not be below 18 years of age at the time of application.
Certificate in Distance Education
The minimum entry requirements for the course are as follows:
(i) A Form IV Certificate with at least 5 passes or its equivalent plus
(ii) A professional Certificate obtained from a nationally recognized Training Institution. Or
(iii) A Diploma or Advanced Diploma or a First Degree or Postgraduate Degree
Certificate in poultry production and health
The minimum entry requirement for the course is;
(i) A form four certificate with at least 5 passes or its equivalent
Diploma in poultry production and health
The minimum entry requirements for the course are as follows:
(i) A form four certificate with at least 5 passes or its equivalent And
(ii) One or more principal passes at “A” level in science subjects and such a candidate must have passed biology and chemistry at “O” level. Or
(iii) Certificate in Animal health or Animal production from a recognized institution.
Diploma in distance education and open learning
The minimum entry requirements for the course are as follows:
(i) A Class “B” and above, Certificate in Distance Education of the Open University of Tanzania (OUT) or an equivalent qualification. or
(ii) 5 passes at O-level or its equivalent plus at least 2 years of relevant professional experience. or
(iii) At least one (1) principal Pass and one (1) subsidiary at A-level plus one year relevant professional experience. or
(iv) A two year Diploma or a Degree in any relevant field. E.g. Education, Humanities, Social Sciences etc.
CYP Diploma in Youth Development
(a) 5 passes at O level or equivalent plus at least 2 years of experience in Youth work or
Professional certificate in Commonwealth Youth Programme plus three credits at O level and at least 2 years of experience in youth work. or
One principal pass and one subsidiary at A-level plus one year experience in youth work. or
A two year Diploma or Degree from any field related to youth work plus at least one-year of experience in youth work.
(b) In addition to the above an applicant must be competent in both oral and written English. He or she will be required to do a test.
Degree programmes
Applicants should fulfill the following conditions:
OPTION I:Based on School Examinations.
(a) Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (C.S.E.E) or East African Certificate of Education (Ordinary level) or equivalent, with passes in FIVE approved subjects, obtained prior to the sitting of the Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (A.C.S.E.E.) or equivalent. and
(i) Two Principal Level Passes (in appropriate subjects) or
(ii) An appropriate equivalent Diploma/Certificate approved by Senate of the Open University of Tanzania.
(b) Additional requirements for different degree programmes;
(i) B.Sc. (General) and B.Sc. (Education).
Two Principal Level Passes in appropriate Science subjects.
(ii) B.Sc. (ICT)
Two principal level passes with one being Advanced Mathematics Or
Any two science subjects at a principal level with mathematics as subsidiary Or
First Degree holders from other disciplines, with Mathematics as a subsidiary at Advanced level.
(iii) B.A (Gen.), B.A. (Ed.) and BA (Tourism studies), B.A (Sociology), B.A (Social Work)
Two principal level passes in Arts subjects. Or
Ordinary Diploma in Community Development, Social Sciences and CYP with a ‘B+' average or higher grade.
(iv) B. Com. (Gen.), B.Com. (Ed.), BBA (Gen.) and BBA (Ed.)
Two principal level passes in Accountancy, Commerce, Economics or Mathematics. or
Two or more principal level passes in any of the following subject combinations: PCM, PCB, PGM, CBG, and HGE or
Science Diploma, an appropriate Advanced Diploma/Certificate with a “B+” average credit or higher grade.
(v) LL.B.
Any two principal level passes Plus "O" level credit passes in History and English. or
An appropriate equivalent Diploma/Certificate in Law with Distinction
(vi) B.Ed
Two principal level passes with at least one being a teaching subject. or
An appropriate Diploma /Certificate with a "B" average credit or higher grade.
(vi) B. Ed (Special Education)
Diploma in Special Education or
Two principal level passes /Diploma in Education plus Certificate in Special Education
NB:
Students who will take one teaching subject and a course package in Adult Education or Distance Education or Special Education take the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed).
Holders of any first or higher degree who wish to pursue a professional career in education need not apply for the BA with Education or BSc with education or B.Com with education or B.Ed. A shorter programme exists leading to a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE). For details see Postgraduate Studies Prospectus or write to the Dean, Faculty of Education or to the DVC (Academic).
Each Faculty has compiled a list of senate approved equivalent Diploma and certificates. The lists are available at each Regional centre and at the headquarters, also they are available in the General Information Booklet 2007 Intake of the Open University of Tanzania.
(c) Special requirements:
Other than the above general conditions of admission, certain subjects have special requirements and conditions. The subjects involved are English Language and Linguistics, Economics and Business Studies.
1. English Language and Linguistics: Requires a principal pass in English Language.
2. Economics: Students choosing Economics must have a credit pass in Mathematics at 'O' Level and either a Principal Pass in Economics or Mathematics at 'A' Level.
3. Business Studies: Applicants choosing Business Studies must have a credit pass in Mathematics or Book keeping and Commerce at 'O' Level.
Candidates are required to observe these conditions very carefully when making the choices as non-observance of them will lead to problems of proper placement in the degree programmes.
OPTION II: Based on Mature Age Entry Examinations:
Candidates who have satisfied examiners in the Mature Age Entry Examinations set by Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) or any other recognized University will be considered for admission. Written evidence of a satisfactory Pass will be essential.
OPTION III: Based on Performance in Foundation Courses:
Candidates who do not qualify under options I and II may register for Foundation Courses offered by The Open University of Tanzania. This is a one-year course. Those who pass examinations set at the end of the course will be eligible for registration for the degree programmes listed above.
OPTION IV: Based on other Awards:
Candidate with awards from other institutions of higher learning will be considered on their own merit. These include a degree or an advanced Diploma in a different field.
N.B: Students gaining admission to this university as transfer cases from accredited universities can transfer their grades only after getting approval from the senate.

Mode of Application
(i) All applications for all the above Certificates, Diploma and Degree programme must be accompanied by photocopies of relevant certificates/Transcripts (including O Level) and a fee of Tshs. 10,000/= by Tanzanian citizens or US $30 for non-Tanzanians. Applications without these enclosures will not be considered.
Applicants should effect their fee payments through NBC Ltd, City Corporate Branch Account number 011103002558 or NMB Ltd,Bank House Branch Account number 2011100105. Fee payment can also be made through Postal Orders or Money Fax.
Fee remittance by mail transfer is not encouraged because it poses difficulties in tracing the name and address of an applicant.
(ii) The deadline for the receipt of the Application letters for 2007 Intake will be 15th October 2006. On receipt of the applications, the Open University of Tanzania will send the application forms together with the General Information booklet to the applicants. Forms are also obtainable in our website: http://www.out.ac.tz
(iii) Each applicant, on receipt of the application form should fill it immediately and send to the nearest Regional Centre of the Open University of Tanzania before 31st October, 2006.
(iv) Names of successful applicants will be published the 2nd week of December 2006.
(v) All Application Forms issued for the year 2006 intake will not be accepted. New
applications should be made and new application fees should be paid for if one is to be considered for admission in the academic year 2007.
Admission of Visually Impared students
.Applications are invited from qualified print-disabled persons for BA (Ed.) and B. Ed Programmes. These include visually impaired persons and those who for some reasons cannot write with their hands, these will mainly use Audio-study materials in the form of audiocassettes instead of the normal Print materials.
The print materials are recorded in Cassettes for B.A. (Ed), B.Ed. students and their teachers. They in turn are supplied with tape recorders for routine use in the teaching/learning process. Needless to say, the audio study material will be equally useful for the ordinary Student. Applicants are urged to respond quickly so that the University can proceed to compile the names for selection in good time and arrange a special Orientation for them ahead of the others.
Applicants who do not meet the entry requirements for the degree programmes for which they applied may first apply for Foundation Course provided that they meet its entry requirements specified above.
